🗓️ Upcoming Board Meeting – Friday, May 2 at 11:00 AM

We know this is an unusual day and time for a board meeting, and we want to acknowledge that up front. Unfortunately, it was the only option available that worked with the directors’ and management’s schedules. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

👉 This meeting will replace the previously mentioned April 24th board meeting.

This is a Board of Directors meetingnot a reconvening of the Annual Meeting of the membership.

📝 As always, the agenda will be posted at least 48 hours in advance, but one key topic will be the finalization of proposed changes to the amendments.

🔹 This current volunteer board made the decision a while ago to make owner input a priority by placing it at the beginning of the meetings — so homeowners can share their thoughts before board discussions and decisions take place. This is one of several steps we've taken to prioritize transparency and resident involvement.

Attendance & Verification Requirements

Attendance is limited to verified members of the Association, in accordance with our governing documents.

Only the following individuals may attend:

Owners listed on a property deed

Individuals with a valid Power of Attorney

Authorized representatives of a trust or corporate entity

📍 Help Us Plan – Pre-Register by Thursday, April 24

We are currently working to secure a suitable venue and need your help estimating attendance.

➡️ If you plan to attend, please complete the following pre-registration form as soon as possible but by end of day Thursday, April 24 to ensure you're counted when we determine venue size, seating, and materials.

While pre-registration is not required to attend, it is the only way to ensure we can adequately prepare for you. Your response helps us make sure the space and resources meet the needs of those planning to participate.

Board Officer Updates

At the April 10 Board Meeting, Desma Underwood submitted her written resignation from the role of President.

The Board voted to appoint the following new officer roles:

  • Shelly McLaughlin – President
  • Bret Melvin – Vice President
  • Desma Underwood – Secretary

The following retain their previous roles:

  • Paul Buscemi – Treasurer
  • Kyle Stewart – Director

We thank each of them for their continued service to the community and commitment to moving Highlands forward.

🙏 Thank You to April 10 Attendees

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the April 10 board meeting and helped make it a smooth, kind, and respectful conversation. Your presence, input, and encouragement of a productive tone are deeply appreciated.

📺 State of the HOA Presentation – Coming Soon

The State of the HOA presentation from the April 10 meeting will be available soon in the secure owner portal at https://portal.hoaemt.com/.

If you haven’t registered for the portal yet, we encourage you to do so now. It’s the central hub for all official HOA records, including:

  • Meeting agendas and minutes
  • Contracts and financial reports
  • Governing documents
  • Community updates and announcements

The portal helps us ensure transparency, streamline communication, and give homeowners easy, direct access to the information that matters.

📧 If you need assistance registering, please email office@thehighlandsws.com, and someone from management will be happy to help.

🧩 Amendment 5 – Community Feedback Needed

Following discussion at the April 10 board meeting, we’re continuing to seek homeowner input on Amendment 5 related to leasing.

If you have ideas for a reasonable compromise that could help make this amendment more broadly supported within the community, we invite you to share your thoughts with us. We're especially looking for feedback from all sides of the conversation — whether you support leasing restrictions, oppose them, or fall somewhere in between.

📬 Please email your suggestions to directors@thehighlandsws.com no later than end of day Tuesday, April 29 so the board has adequate time to review and organize feedback ahead of the May 2 board meeting.

All input received will be carefully considered as we continue refining Amendment 5 for potential adoption.

Thank you for your continued involvement and thoughtful engagement.
